THE UKRAINIAN STONEHENGE

“THE UKRAINIAN STONEHENGE”
June 2008’s edition of National Geographic showcases the ancient megalithic ruins
known as Stonehenge. Located on the open grassland of Salisbury Plain, in Southern
England, Stonehenge is one of the most famous, and mysterious, prehistoric sites in
the world. Archaeologists believe that Stonehenge’s upright standing stones were
erected around 2200 BC. England’s Stonehenge is a true testament to early astronomy
and ancient scientific accomplishments. There, every year on the summer solstice, the
spectacle of the sun rising in line with the stones as dawn approaches draws crowds of
people astonished at this miracle of science. Stonehenge is proof that the early peoples
were more sophisticated about the planets than we give them credit for.
Scientists of today know that sunrise and sunset positions move around the horizon
each year, going from a northernmost position on the summer solstice, move south to
cross an east-west line on the equinoxes and continue south to a southernmost
position at winter solstice. We know how the axis of rotation of the earth is tipped 23.5
degrees with respect to a perpendicular line to its orbital plane. For example, the latitude
of Stonehenge is 51°N, so the summer full moon rise nearest the solstice will be 50
degrees north of east on precisely June 21st each year. The solstice sunrises are used
to anchor a calendar to the seasons of the year.
Now, a team of American scientists and documentary filmmakers working in the Black
Sea area of Russia have discovered something astonishing: they unearthed an ancient
monument that they’re calling “The Ukrainian Stonehenge.” So, today, the recent
archaeo-astronomical findings at the Ukrainian Stonehenge are of value to modern-day
astronomers documenting ancient celestial events.
Moreover, the Ukrainian Stonehenge is even more mysterious than England’s. There’s a
massive yawning valley, with two mountain ranges side by side, and, atop one of the
mountains, sits a gigantic carved-out hole that could easily fit a dozen people. Then,
sticking up, deep on the valley floor a half-mile away, is a vast monolithic rectangular
boulder --- it’s just standing upright, straight out of the ground. This boulder, from stone
that’s not indigenous to the area, has a purpose: At the summer solstice in June, the
sun rises and shines right through the hole with a shaft of sunlight hitting the top of the
boulder, exactly like a gun’s sight. This means that the Ukrainian Stonehenge functions
like England’s Stonehenge --- yet was probably built earlier…and is 3,500 miles away.
The thought of a newly-discovered ancient Ukrainian Stonehenge is mind-boggling. It
proves the intellectual achievements of the ancients, that these people knew the planet
was round, knew about the Earth’s rotations around the Sun, knew about the seasons
and the calendars. It’s proof that ancient man had a great knowledge base of the
universe. There are probably hundreds of myths and legends about Stonehenge.
Various people have attributed the building of this great megalith to the Danes, Romans,
Saxons, Greeks, Atlanteans, Egyptians, Phoenicians Celts, King Aurelius Ambrosious,
Merlin, and even Aliens. Now, what will they say about the Ukrainian Stonehenge…?
